Title:

Captain Joseph Limeburner ship logs, 1853-1860

Creator/Contributor:

Limeburner, Joseph, 1816-1891, creator

Abstract:

Log book of the ship "Samuel Russell" with dated entries for six runs between New York, San Francisco, and Whampoa, China from April 15, 1851 to July 21, 1853. Entries include weather observations, latitude and longitude, course, and sail settings. The first 13 pages of the log have been re-used as a scrapbook and are pasted over with newspaper clippings obscuring the first 96 days of entries.
Printed label on front cover, "Log of the Great Republic, Capt. J. Limeburner." The log book actually starts with continuing dated entries for the ship "Samuel Russell" from October 6, 1853 to January 20, 1854. It also contains dated entries for the ship "Great Republic" from February 6, 1855 to July 21,1860 for various voyages between New York, London, Marseilles, Cape Horn, and San Francisco. Also includes one loose page of an undated abstract log for the "Great Republic" and a detached page from a modern publication containing a lithographic print of a Currier & Ives print of the "Great Republic."

Captain Joseph Limburner (1816-1891) captained the ship "Samuel Russell," designed by Captain Nat Palmer, and the ship "Great Republic," designed by Donald McKay and rebuilt by Nat Palmer after a fire nearly destroyed it in London. Both were record-setting clipper ships involved in the China trade.
